Have you ever wondered how the good networkers got that way? If you ask them they will tell you all they do is seek out information from whomever they chat with while keeping an open mind and a willingness to learn.
They look at every conversation as a way to become smarter and more skilled. They absorb that new information and remember the source of who shared it with them. What matters is that they realize they do not have all the answers but rather who has the answer.
These people take pleasure in passing that knowledge on, because they know by giving, they will, in fact, get more than they gave. (Which reminds me of my favorite saying from Zig Ziglar, “You get what you want by helping others get what they want!”.)
If you don’t believe you are a good networker yet strive to become better…well, I encourage you to seek out the good networkers you know, or would like to know, and ask for help. What? You say you don’t know who they are? Well here is a tip for Chamber functions. Seek out “your friends in the yellow badge”, they are known as Chamber Champions and they are good at networking and they are good at connecting.
Then I encourage you to make asking questions, listening to responses and sharing what you’ve learned a networking habit and your value to everybody around you will increase. And in the process, you will build a strong network of professionals who will do everything they can to return the favor.
Now, go get started!
We have Business After Hours on Thursday, February 25 at UMB, downtown on Walnut in conjunction with The Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City. A great opportunity to network, find a friend in the yellow badge and learn more about art in Kansas City.
